Doggie Rescue Felt-off

Want to help raise money for Monika’s Doggie Rescue AND make a funky felted Pooch Poncho for your dog? Well now you can, at the Doggie Rescue Felt-off.

I’ve been mumbling about doing this for a while and after I ran it past Rambo’s mum earlier in the week, I thought what the hell, it’s time to just do it.

Now don’t worry, it won’t be for a while yet but unless I make a public commitment then it could remain just an idea, right? (And as Seth says, you have to ship, so ship we will.)

The event will essentially be a fun couple of hours where you get to learn how to make a fabulously warm and funky felted Pooch Poncho from scratch, absolutely customised for your dog, and in the company of other doggie rescuers, walk away with it AND contribute about $50 each to Monika’s at the same time.

Sounds good, huh?

So here’s how we see it working at this point:

  • We will hold the Doggie Rescue Charity Felt-off towards late February 2011 (in time for cooler Autumn weather).
  • It will be held in Sydney to begin with, at a laundromat adjoining a coffee shop (yet to be found – step 1).
  • The day will have a series of sessions – probably 2 hour blocks.
  • You will pay $70 to reserve a place and turn up to the session you nominate, WITH the measurements of your dog. (See the pic below.)
  • We will gather all the people in a session at the start and I will teach you my simple method for making funky felted Pooch Ponchos out of 100% wool (Merino, Merino X and Corriedale).
  • You’ll then dive into the wool bags, lay up your design under a bit of supervisory instruction, wet it down, roll it up…
  • And then that’s where the washing machines and coffee come in. We wash them about 6 times about 15 minutes a time and then…
  • Our fabulous resident seamstress will quickly sew on the elastic, blanket stitch the edges and bob’s your uncle! Pooch Poncho done.

As we like to say, love one, save one!

So, target dollars: $3,000, target people: 50.

(And if you want to see some of the designs you can make, like the Camo, Dog-o-saurus, Dog-o-dilius and the D-ebra, there are plenty to see on this blog. At various times Alfy, Mondoe and Rambo – all rescued from Monika’s have paraded the latest in the road-testing range…)
